Which cosmetic treatment will give you the more youthful results you’re looking for?

There are so many options today to smooth wrinkles and fine lines without resorting to surgery. Both Botox and dermal fillers in Manalapan, NJ, have become popular cosmetic treatment options that our dermatologists, Dr. Lisa Silbret and Dr. Alan Schechter, offer. However, these injectables work differently on the face, and it’s important that our patients understand these treatments better so they can choose the right one to meet their needs.

How Botox Works

Our Manalapan, NJ, dermatologists use Botox to target dynamic wrinkles or the wrinkles that are accentuated when making facial expressions. Botox is injected into certain muscle groups of the face to temporarily pause nerve signals that tell the muscles to contract. This relaxes the muscles of the face to lessen the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

How Dermal Fillers Work

Dermal fillers work a bit differently from Botox. As we age we lose elastin and collagen, which causes us to lose volume in certain areas of the face such as the cheeks. One way in which we can restore volume and maintain the youthful contours of your face is with dermal fillers, which often use hyaluronic acid to plump up soft tissue.

Target Different Wrinkles

Depending on the type of wrinkles you’re looking to treat, our Manalapan, NJ, cosmetic dermatologists may recommend Botox or dermal fillers. You may want to consider Botox if you are looking to smooth away:

  • Forehead lines including the vertical lines between the brows
  • Crow’s feet (lines around the eyes)
  • Bunny lines (those laugh lines that develop on and around your nose)

Dermal fillers may be a better option for you if you are looking to treat:

  • Baggy eyes due to a loss of volume
  • Laugh lines around the nose and mouth
  • Flattened cheeks due to volume loss
  • Thinning lips

Results with Botox and Dermal Fillers

Both Botox and dermal fillers only provide temporary results. Once you’ve received Botox, you’ll see results in about 3-4 days with maximum effects occurring about seven days after treatment. Botox results usually last 3-4 months but can last up to 6 months. Dermal fillers last a bit longer. Some fillers last six months to a year, while others can last several years.
